UNESCO Churches in Troodos
Every traveller to the island of Cyprus should visit at least one of the 10 frescoed Byzantine churches in the mountains of the Troodos Mountain range, which Cyprus has registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. With the proposed route, the visitor can get to know 7 of these 10 churches, which are in three geographical districts: Pitsilia, Solea and Marathasa, as well as some other areas of natural beauty along the route.
They are excellent evidence of Byzantine culture on the island and important monuments of ecclesiastical architecture in the countryside that are preserved in very good condition. Their architecture is unique and appears to be of indigenous origin, as it is found only in the Troodos Mountain range. Characteristic is the gabled wooden roof with hooked tiles of local production. Particularly impressive are the frescoes that adorn the interior and in several cases parts of the exteriors of the ten churches.
This specific route has been designed for the visitor starting from the eastern part of Cyprus (Nicosia, Famagusta and Larnaca).
